Hi Neil,
I'd greatly appreciate a lookup of any Peter or Patrick McGovern in the Peninsular & Waterloo Rolls. My gg-grandfather was born in France c1822 his father known as Patrick or Peter McGovern being in the army. He was born in Ireland I thought I'd found him through the National Archives but it turned out to be the wrong man, this one serving in the West Indies. Also looking for advice on how I could find out the names of all who served in a Regt (71st) at a given point during the Peninsular War? I've heard of Muster Rolls but do they extend to rank & file and are they complete? I'm writing a paper on a sergeant from the Regt but would like to get my head around the structure, numbers & if possible put names to positions. Hi Jim,
Hmm, I have to say I can't find any Patrick/Peter McGovern in the medal rolls. What regiment was the one you found at the NA but rejected? Might be worth checking the regiment's movements a bit further. As to your query about Muster Rolls, they do include other ranks. Whether they're 100% complete I can't say, but I get the impression they're pretty close to it. The rolls are quarterly, noting a unit's location, soldiers' names, ranks, pay, dates of enlistment, discharge, punishments, hospitalisations, absences. Some also include date of birth. There are also attestation/discharge papers, description books, casualty returns, pension records and of course medal rolls. 1/71st were at Waterloo for example, and is organised by individual companies. Can I ask the name of the chap you're interested in? Neil |

I am the great-grand-daughter of Patrick McGovern, born in 1847 (Ireland). He married Isabella Hutchison in St Ignatius' Church, Wishaw. on 15 February 1869. Isabella's mother was Sidney Horn. Their family was, Patrick (Peter) [my grandfather], Sidney, [ or Sydney] William, Alice, Isabella, Jessie (and two other children) - all called McGovern.
William McGovern - born 1822 was, I think born in France - [my gr gr grandfather). He married Alice Berrie in Co Monaghan in 1842. William's father was Patrick McGovern - a soldier who served in France. He married Elizabeth Dolan - she was born in 1777 and died in 1875. I have tried to establish through contacts in Dublin if Patrick was a member of the Irish Brigade (post 1798) but can find nothing. Because of the Customs House fire in 1922, a lot of records have been destroyed. Patricia |

Hello My grandfather was Patrick McGovern [1847-1905], brother of Edward, Mary Anne, Elizabeth, John and (baby). His parents were William McGovern [1822-1883] and Alice Berry [1822-1862]. They were married in St Ultan's RC Church, Killanny, Co Monaghan [c.1842]. William was born in France as his father Patrick was a soldier maried to Elizabeth Dolan. I have been to Killanny [a beautiful hamlet] and cannot trace them - the church is a ruin and I cannot trace any record of their marriage. Elizabeth Dolan's father was James Dolan and her mother was Elizabeth Reilly. I have met a 3rd cousin [grand-daughter of Mary Anne McGovern] and have a picture of Mary-Anne. I would appreciate a copy of the picture that you have - perhaps it is the same one as yours? What else can you tell me about Elizabeth McGovern? I will be going up to GROin Edinburgh soon, and back to Killanny. Any information may help me. Adh mór Patricia |
