Do you have a name and perhaps an age for him? Do you know where he was from in the US?

Hello Mary
Thanks for the reply. I do have a full name (Herbert Dancy) and he was thirty something when he met my nan and my mum was born in 1946. We do not have a US state but I was wondering if somehow I could narrow the search down because he got sent to Norfolk and thats how he met my nan. My nan has always lived in Weybread. My mum thinks he was in the airforce because an old pic she remembers had him with a blue uniform and a flat hat. Thanks Lee |

Hello Lee
I had a look in the 1930 US census to see how many options there are. Altogether there are only six entries for the name which is hopeful! There is a Herbert L Dancy in South Dakota but as he was born in 1889 this rules him out. If yours was, as you say, 30 something around 1946 then we can also rule out the North Carolina one born in 1904 and possibly another North Carolina one born in 1915 though this would be a close thing. That leaves just three. One in North Carolina born in 1924, another also in North Carolina born in 1925 and a third in Ohio born in 1928. Have a look at this: www.norfolkbroads.com/regional-information/regional-history-and-archaeology/us-airforce-overpaid-over-sexed-and-over-here . You could also perhaps contact the Duxford Imperial War Museum to see if they can offer any advice: http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/ . They might be able to tell you how you could access records. Mary |

I have since found out that the village my grandmother lives in hosted 827th Engineer Battalion (Aviation). I would like to visit the National Archives in Kew and find proof that he was there. Will I be able to do this at Kew? Do you have any advice about navigating the archives and anything that I could find out about Herbert?
