Hello everyone this is my first post.

For a while now I have been researching my great grandfather Stanley Eckers, I've been very successful. Its been a bit tricky as he joined the army in 1906 and was demobbed in 1919, before rejoining a few days later and stayed into 1925. Also he changed his name sometime during the war, we don't know why. He was originally Ecker and then changed to Eckers. Despite this, I have managed to get a few photos, his medal card and his service record.

What I really like to know is why he won his military medal. He was awarded it in August 1919. He was shot in the shoulder on April 6th 1918 so I assume it has something to do with that. I would also love some information on his pre war and post war service. Though we have his service record I wondered if anyone could point me in a direction where I could find out other stuff.

A little info about him. He joined the Leicester Reserves sometime in late 1905-early 1906. He didn't have his medical until June 22nd 1906 when he joined the 10th Hussars. I know he was sent to the army to get some discipline by his father, but does anyone know why he didn't have his medical for so long? He went to India from 1907-1912, South Africa 1912-1914, then went with the BEF to France. After he demobbed he stayed in the army for two years until 1921, anyone explain this? He then re-enlisted in the 4th Hussars, serving in India again until 1925. He was promoted and demoted a lot. From private, to lance-corporal, to Sergeant, to corporal etc.

I apologise for the long post. But if anyone with any knowledge of the 10th or 4th Hussars could help me. Or if anyone could shine some light on some of the points, I would be really grateful.

Cheers.

Have you tried the London Gazette for info about the medal? I don't know what would be included but try it - www.london-gazette.co.uk/ .

This is worth a look as well - www.greatwar.co.uk/medals/british-ww1-medal-records.htm .

Perhaps the war diaries for his regiment would have more detail? I think you'd find these at TNA.

You could try the Museum for info about the 10th Hussars - www.armymuseums.org.uk/amot-search/default.asp?Category=Amot&Service=Museum-Display&reference=0000000057 and for the 4th Hussars try www.armymuseums.org.uk/museums/0000000087-Queen-s-Royal-Irish-Hussars-Museum-Collection.htm .

I'm sure someone with more military expertise will be able to help you further.

Mary
