I had probably posted this in the wrong forum(medal look ups) so I will try here.

Hi could someone please help with the following. My grandfather Frederick Albert Smith claims he served in Queenstown Volunteers SA for 2 years 5 months. I had received help from a lovely lady sometime ago advising me that Fred aged 11 1/2 years emigrated via the Goth 1894 along with his family to South Africa. They landed in East London. I have been told that as a British resident he would have had to join one of the local companies within South Africa. I cannot find any listing for Fred on the Queenstown list (had a researcher check) but I am wondering if he joined a volunteer company within Queenstown.
I can find a Frederick Albert Smith in the Bechuanaland Rifles 134 trooper discharged 30.06.01 Mafeking unknown attestation.
Another Frederick Albert Smith Imperial Yeomanry 33939 84th co 22 battalion QSA But these troops I understand were raised in the UK.
And I was told by an aunt via a cousin I have just discovered that Fred told her he was involved in tha Malabeleland campaign and he was involved in some secret service but did not elaborate.
Is it possible that there more detailed records for the above companies that can be checked?
I will enlist the help of a researcher when I can afford one but thought I would try to find any information for the researcher to perhaps make it a bit easier. As I do not know where the family lived once arriving and I can find plenty of Fred's coming to Australia between the years 1901-1906 but nothing to distinguish mine.

thanks for any direction
Deb
