Due to the air raids of WWII we are unable to find WWI Army Service Records for my husband's grandfather. We do have a copy of his Medal Card and, of course, family reminisences of what he did and where he served.
He was in the ASC and on his card, under Corps, is written what looks like 4/amm PH. ASC or 4/amm PW. ASC. We would appreciate any help in understanding what that means. His regimental number starts with M1 Thank you. Rosemary Far North New Zealand. |

Hi Rosemary
The prefix M1 indicated that he was attached to one of the Mechanical Transport sections of the ASC. On the question of the 'amm PH or PW' I wonder if this actually reads 'Amm Pk', which could stand for 'Ammunition Park'? Having looked at the Long Long Trail website I cannot find an ASC Ammunition Park unit with the number 4, but it could still be worth looking at this site yourself to read some of the more general info about the ASC. Regards Martin |

Many thanks, Martin. I have indeed seen that splendid site and learnt quite a lot from it. With your suggestion, I have looked closely at the letter after the P and it could be a K in that the top right side of the K does sweep out a bit and higher than the straight left hand side of the downward stroke - hope that makes sense! I did wonder about ammuntion but like you couldn't find a 4 - but then I couldn't find any single 4 in any of the lists. Driving ammuntion around couldn't have been easy, poor man.
Thanks again for your help. Rosemary Far North New Zealand This post has been edited by RosemaryT: Jun 7 2010, 09:22 AM |

Martin,
After my reply last night I went back onto the Long Trail website and looked at the ASC entries again. I started checking out the various Divisions. I think I may have struck oil with the 5th Division. I went through the order of battle for that Division and came to the following: 5th Divisional Train ASC 4 6 33 & 37 companies. Am I right in thinking that 4/amm PK was part of the 5th Division? Thank you again for your assistance which has pointed me in the right direction for my searching. Rosemary Far North New Zealand |

Rosemary
I'm certainly no expert on WW1, but from what I've read on the Long Long Trail site, I think the 4th could well be part of the 5th Division. Martin |
