I have a distant relative named William Henry Galpin who joined the 5th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment in September 1914. His battalion history is as follows:
Formed at Dorchester in August 1914 as part of K1 and moved to Belton Park (Grantham), initially attached as Army Troops to 11th (Northern) Division. 8 January 1915 : transferred to 34th Brigade in same Division. Sailed from Liverpool on 3 July 1915, going via Mudros to land at Suvla Bay on 6 August 1915. 16 December 1915 : evacuated from Gallipoli and went to Egypt via Mudros. Moved to France, arriving Marseilles 9 July 1916. I have constructed a rough idea of what he did in his time in the war, and what battles he fought in and so forth, but after his arrival at Marseilles I am confused as to what his regiment did there. This is especially important, as he died here on 16th September 1918 by a shell whilst assisting villagers in the local harvest. Could anybody help me with this, please? I'm looking for access to his battalion's war diaries, or just an explanation of what he did or was doing in Marseilles. Thanks! |
