I have an ancestor, Arthur Ernest Barrow, who lived in Verwood, Dorset, who was a gunner for the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died on the 10th December 1918, which I am aware is shortly after the first world war finished. On the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, all I can find about his death is that he died at 'Catterick Camp - Signal Depot' which I assume is a reference to Catterick Garrison, in North Yorkshire. His death is registered in that district, but I can't find out what happened to him. I don't wish to order a death certificate, I want to know what happened to him without doing this. Does anybody know of any way that I can get hold of any records available about Catterick Garrison? Did he perhaps stay in England during the war, or did he go to fight and then return wounded and die as a result of this? Any tips? Thanks smile.gif
His number is 213768 smile.gif

Hi,

If you have a subscription to Ancestry, you can look up his army records there. Just search on Arthur Barrow and don't put his Service Number in.

But if you don't, his Medical Case Sheet states: "Died of "Broncho-Pneumonia. Secondary to Influenza contracted on Ordinary Military Service." He died just after mid-day at 12.30.
The records also give details of his wife's pension - 29/7d per week! I haven't looked through everything on here, but if you need any more info, let me know.

Cheers

RussellF97,

Thank you so much!
I have previously had a subscription to Ancestry and did manage to view a couple of pages of his military records, but I never found any description of his death. Next time I buy a subscription I will definitely check that out. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. If you have any time on your hands, I'd be very grateful if you could have a look to see if there's any other useful information on his sheets.

Cheers smile.gif

Sounds like a case of Spanish Flu to me. More people died of that than died in WW1.
