Hi all, new to site, wonder can some one help me out on my ancestor's N0 1 I have Found a William King Trumpret/Major & his son Wlliam King Jnr in the 23rd Light/Dragoons at the Battle of Waterloo 1815.!!!!!!!. in fact they are both on the Waterloo Roll Call

However what i need to establish is the following, WAS the 23rd Light/Dragoons billeted in or around DUBLIN from 1800-1810 ????????? perhaps in the DUBLIN BARRACKs, as i have found my G/G/grand-dad a JAMES KING was born in DUBLIN 1808 (that is according to the Eglish Census i have for JAMES & his Attestation papers State)
I have a news item that states that JAMES aged 6 was present with his Father ( alas no name or Reg/t mentioned !!!!!!!!!!) but was a TRUMPET/MAJOR at the Battle of Waterloo 1815 ?????

So having searched the archives & the Waterloo Roll Call, i can only find one man who is mentioned as a TRUMPET/MAJOR that being WILLIAM KING of the 23rd Light/Dragoons !!!!!, so can i assume this William is James Father, ??????, to validate this fact, i would need to place WILLIAM in or around DUBLIN between 1805-1810 ????
Can some kind sloe point me in right direction or advise me where i can obtain Military movements records of the 23rd Light/Dragoons !!!!!!, i have browsed many web-sites, to no avail, as there appears to very little data on the 23rd ?????, would be most grateful for any help on this subject thank you Redbert

I too am new to this, and by concidence am also looking for similar information.

I am looking for any details of a Benjamin King of Kent. He served in the 23rd Light Dragoons who fought in the Peninsula war and Waterloo.

I know he ended his service as a sergant, and probably started out at Maidstone, and upon retiring settled in Marden as an out Chelsea Pensioner, but nothing more than that.

Garry

I can confirm that Sgt. B King is on the Military General Service medal roll, with one clasp for the Battle of Talavera.

His service record appears to be available at the National Archives:

I don't know if this is any help but looking through newspapers there are some mentions of the 23rd Light Dragoons.

September 17th 1805

The Regiments under actual orders for Foreign Service............In Ireland, the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Dragoon Guards, and the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 23rd Light Dragoons with the first Battalions of the ...etc etc .....are under similar orders.

Hello Annella sorry not to have replied sooner, been away for awhile, very interested in your article about the 23rd Light/dragoons being in DUBLIN, is it at all possible you can inform which PAPERs you found the info on the 23rd L/D's, as i need to place them in DUBLIN in 1808 or 1809, there is very little records on this Reg/t, i have been searching for months now without much success sadly, even been over to DUBLIN, but sadly all the records that are available are all at KEW, DUBLIN archives only have Military Records starting in 1922, thanks to the up-rising many records were destroyed, i may never find what i am seeking ??????, would be most grateful for any comments Thanks Redbert

Hi Garry noticed your name KING i to am a KING, however i have a double-barrel WILTON-KING, if you search the Ancestry Site Catalogue, & put in 23rd Light/Dragoons in the search engine, it will displays info, as i got 2 Attestation Papers from this site relating to my Ancestors, & i am sure i noticed a BEN/KING,
My 2 ancestors were Father & Son both with the name WILLIAM, but i have discovered it is very difficult to find any records for the 23rd L/D's as they were only in service from 1797 to 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo they were disbanded !!!!!!, so Garry if you can get to, or get some one to visit KEW,
you find they have the only records, Hope this helps Garry, i have some info on the Reg/t so if you have any questions, i will attempt to help you
Cheers redbert Bert W-King

The 23rd Light Dragoons continued in service after Waterloo and were disbanded in 1818. The regiment ceased to exist altogether whilst most other regiments were absorbed into the regiments that we still see today. I have my relative Corporal William Hall's discharge papers from the regiment. He was medically discharged in late 1817 and the Regiment disbanded the following year.

If anybody has any information about Corporal William Hall of the 23rd Light Dragoons, I would appreciate it greatly. I am from Sydney, Australia, so I find it difficult to get information from the UK.

I know that he fought at Waterloo in 1815 and was promoted in the field to the rank of Corporal. He appears on the Waterloo medal register of the Regiment as Cpl Wm Hall.

Hi Bake, it is very hard work finding data on the 23rd L/G, but i have just read a very interesting book named The Trumpet of Glory by Ernest A Gray
ISBN 10: 0709023537 ISBN 13: 978070902351 its about a chap named JOHN SHIPP who was a Horse Vet with the 23rd L/D, it covers the Battle of TALAVERA & WATERLOO, i was looking for any reference to my G/G/G/G/Dad who was a Trumpet/Major in the 23rd, alas no mention, but it might be worth you perhaps loaning the book from your local Library, you never know your kin might be mentioned, but its a good read anyway!!!!!! well woth the time to read Redbert

I have a copy of the Waterloo Medal Register for the 23rd Light Dragoons and it shows the following:

Trumpet/Major (as Sergeant) William King (18) was in Captain Gerrards Troop No1 as was my g/g/g/grandfather Corporal William Hall (23);

Sergeant Ben King was in Captain Hamilton's Troop No4 (94);

Trumpeter William King Jnr was in Captain Cox's Troop No6 (33).

Regards

Hi Bake thanks for the data, I have both William Kings Attestation papers, it could be that they are my James King relatives, as i have found William Snr was in DUBLIN in 1809 up to April, prior to the battle of Talavera !!!!!!

Then i Found both were transferred to the ROYAL STAFF CORPS from the 23rd light dragoons 1818 after Waterloo, this is the very Reg/t my James King enlisted in 1821 as a Bugler aged 13, is this all merely coincidence !!!!!!!!!!
I can not be 100% sure but i think they are all related
Redbert good luck with the book
